Sweet [Tornado Ravaged] Alabama

A couple months ago, Alabama was ravaged by a deadly tornado outbreak.  A couple weeks ago, I joined a small group from my church to go there to help with disaster relief efforts. It was very heartbreaking, perspective shifting, and rewarding.

My favorite part of the trip was spending two days helping a sweet man named Larry in the tiny town of Webster’s Chapel.  He was older and had had open-heart surgery and a hip replacement right before the tornadoes, and his (uninsured) home was completely blown away in the storm.  Webster’s Chapel is off the radar compared to some of the larger cities that had been hit (like Tuscaloosa), so it has much less volunteers, and therefore, sweet Larry had been working on cleaning up the remains of what used to be his home all by himself (so sad!).  He was so grateful to have our help and our company, and we instantly become huge Larry fans.  Despite his horribly unfortunate situation, he had such a positive attitude.  It was so inspiring! Fortunately, he wasn’t in his home when the storm hit, so he didn’t get hurt.  (He kept saying… “I’m alive. That’s the main thing.”).  He is now living with his friend, so thankfully he isn’t completely homeless.
Our team with sweet Larry (in the striped shirt behind me) and his cousin, Mr. Maxwell. We love Lar!
The second day, Larry’s 77-year-old snarky cousin, Mr. Maxwell, came to help as well, (which was really encouraging to know that he had other people to help him). We were able to make significant progress in sweet Larry’s clean up efforts, but there is still an overwhelming amount to be done.  It was hard to say goodbye to sweet Larry, but we got his mailing address, so we plan on sending him cards from time to time. He definitely will be in my thoughts and prayers for a really long time.

We also partnered with Samaritan’s Purse and volunteered in Tuscaloosa one day. It was also very sad; entire neighborhoods are just gone.  Somehow the University of Alabama campus barely missed getting hit. We spent the day doing more clean up work for an elderly couple named Charlie and Mary whose home was completely flattened.  They weren't there at the time, so we unfortunately didn't get to make the personal connection with them like we did with Lar.

The best part of our day in Tuscaloosa was that I got to have a wonderful reunion with two of my darling friends from the Costa Rica summer project I went on in 2008, Wesley and Emma
Don't be alarmed... he always makes weird faces.
After 8+ hour days of intense manual labor in the humid 100 degree heat, I was emotionally/physically exhausted, but so very thankful to be able to help.  I truly had never seen devastation like this. Even if you can't make a trip to Alabama (or Joplin or Oklahoma or anywhere else affected by these deadly storms), here are a few ways you can help. :-)

  • You can donate to the "Storm Troopers" (clever name, right?) which is a community led group leading relief efforts in small and severely-in-need-of-help Webster's Chapel by sending contributions to
          Regions Bank
         510 W. Main St.
         Glencoe, AL 35905
         (256) 492-1361

  • You can donate to larger organizations like Samaritan's Purse who have a large team of volunteers set up there. (You can also partner them to come to these affected states and volunteer).
  • You can pray for all the people who lost loved ones and everything they owned in these horrible storms (like Larry and Charlie and Mary!).
Overall, this trip was amazing.  I wish I could go back and do it again.
Our wonderful group, wonderfully led by Matt and Ellen.

The Tale of Tommy Magic (and other Memorial Day happenings)

As I've said before, I adore 3-day weekends, and this past Memorial Day was even better than your average 3-day weekend.
On Saturday, I journeyed to San Diego for the highly anticipated wedding of Bradley and Kiersten. Garrett, Ellen, and Ellen's two wonderful visiting (slash wedding crashing) friends, Katie and Adam, joined me on this journey.  (Random sidenote about Adam... he looks exactly like Ryan Gosling.  As fate would have it, he actually met and took a photo with his dreamy doppelganger at the Getty with Katie and Ellen!  You must see for yourself... the resemblance blows my mind...
Crazy, right??
Even though I (unfortunately) wasn't there for that fateful moment, I felt that the story needed to be told.

So, back to the wedding...a low-point of the weekend was the insane traffic the entire way which more than doubled our trip time, thereby causing us to completely MISS the ceremony. (Blurgh!)  I'd like to think we made up for that sad mishap by thoroughly enjoying the reception.  This lovely party was held in Balboa Park . This was the first formal occasion/super fun dance party that a good handful of closest friends from LA and I have attended together, which made it exceptionally fun.

WB represent.
Mr. and Mrs. Hasemeyer!
If you like it then you shoulda put a ring on it.
In addition to my amazing (slash hilarious) friends, there were a few notable guests in attendance.

Luke from The OC is apparently great friends with the bride! He even played the guitar and sang a lovely rendition of 'At Last' for the bride/groom's first dance.  A very random pleasant surprise of the evening. Ha!
Calvin from Greek. Another friend of the bride. I watched a few episodes of the first season ... not sure why I didn't continue after that because it was really funny.  Despite my lame following of the show, I saw "Calvin" and "Cappie" at The Troubadour when I was interning in 2007 and took the below photo. (Don't worry... I didn't take a photo with him at the wedding).
My hair is so short...yowza.
Buster from Arrested Development.  I haven't seen enough episodes of this show to recognize him at all (a tragedy, I know.  I'll try to get on that asap).  Garrett did, however, and said one of his (many) hilarious quotes of the day upon meeting him: "So, how long after meeting you do I have to wait to talk about Arrested Development?" hahah.  He said 5 minutes.  He then complimented Garr's glasses.

Overall, AMAZING wedding (er... reception).  Definitely in my top 5 favorite weddings.  Next up on the list of amazing things that happened last weekend: dinner at Terroni (which was wonderful minus the waitress accidentally spilling several large glasses of ice water directly in my lap) and the "Shitty Jobs" show at UCB which most notably includes the always-hilarious Donald Glover and Ben Schwartz. (Not as wonderful as my beloved "Facebook" show, but nothing really is.  I still give it 2 thumbs up.)
The final wonderful thing I packed into my Memorial Day weekend: Disneyland!  I tagged along with the Godfreys and their guests and it was a glorious day.
I was afraid it would be horrendously crowded due to the holiday, but it really wasn't!  It definitely helped that Matt and Ellen are straight up Disney pros (they have a season pass and go every 2-3 weeks.  Literally).  They had the perfect itinerary for us and had Matt running all around to get fast passes (which essentially allow you to cut in front of all the foolish people in line who don't have fast passes). We got there the moment the park opened at 8 am and stayed until after 10 pm.  That is 14+ hours of intense Disney fun. YOWZA. Needless to say, we were absolutely exhausted.  We all simultaneously hit a low point around 4 pm on the Finding Nemo Submarine Adventure ride, candidly captured by Adam.
Luckily a very fun(ny) ride on the Matterhorn (awkward wink) and a viewing of the spectacular World of Color show revived us. I don't think words (or the below photo) can really do this show justice, but let me just say WOW.  It was amazing.  Go see it, if at all possible.
The grand finale of our Disney day came in form of Tommy Magic, a "cast member" as they call them at D-land who works at The Tower of Terror (the best ride ever).  (He claims that is his birth given name). Upon exiting the ride, Adam told him he was funny.  He then asked us if we wanted to skip all the lines and take a personal tour of the "Hollywood Hotel" (the setting of the ride). Um, okay! It was so cool... he told us creepy things about the building and showed us a lot of decorations and props that are actually from the old Twilight Zone tv show.  Dear Tommy then rode the ride with us (as we clearly point out in the below photo).

Our tour with Tommy Magic was very magical indeed.  Matt put it perfectly when he said, "I feel like he should have said 'goodbye,' and snapped his fingers and disappeared in a cloud of smoke."

(Sidenote: Matt and Adam are now friends with him on facebook. hahaha.  Perhaps this will lead to more behind-the-scenes Disneyland attraction tours in our future).  ;-)

Please forgive the overly long post.... Memorial Day weekend was just full of many gems this year.

Currently listening to: Best Coast
Why: I've previously declared her album "Crazy For You" (which sounds like it was recorded in her parent's garage... kind of like The Stroke's first album) my official summer album.  And what a perfect summer album it is.  Additionally, I just found out that Mary and I are going to Outside Lands in San Francisco for my birthday and Best Coast will be there! Happy birthday to me, fo'real.

Annie.
