Bootie-licious

This past weekend, several friends and I bravely ventured to a monthly mash-up dance party in Echo Park known as "Bootie LA."

With a name like that and a location in the epicenter of extreme hipster-ville, my sweet non-hipstery friends and I were definitely unsure of what kind of crazy night we were getting ourselves into.  But, oh what fun it was.

The atmosphere is difficult to describe.  It involved hundreds of people dancing to crazy mash-up mixes while tossing a huge inflatable pirate and/or beach ball around the dance floor, all the while a resident dance crew known as R.A.I.D. (Random Acts of Irreverent Dancing) performed extremely irreverent/hilarious dance routines in insane costumes on stage.   Here is one of their less-irreverent dance routines my dear friend Matt Godfrey captured that gives you a slight picture of their craziness.

Bootie LA - R.A.I.D. from Matt Godfrey on Vimeo.

Overall, Bootie LA was ridiculous and crazy and hilarious and FUN.  Bootie LA happens the first Saturday of every month, and we are definitely planning on returning to shake our booties there in March.

Five unrelated side notes:
  1. I'm a new huge fan of Words With Friends. Play with me...AnnieTerracina. Holla.
  2. I watched The Fighter tonight, which means I only have 2 more of the Best Picture nominees to watch before the Oscars on Feb. 27.  I'm scared to watch 127 Hours, but I'm going to make myself...eek.  The Fighter was great though...highly recommend.
  3. I'm slightly jealous of all those snow days in Oklahoma. I could definitely use a few days to rest and recharge at home, and if it takes a blizzard or two to make me do that...I'll take it.
  4. I hosted a baby shower for the first time today for my extremely pregnant boss.  It was a wonderful success.
  5. Friday, 2/11, is the last day to vote for my darling cousin Erika to win a dream wedding! It only takes a moment... vote HERE. :-)
Currently listening to: iTunes on shuffle
Why: Perhaps thinking about Bootie LA's schizophrenic mash ups was the cause of this, but I wasn't really craving any type of music in particular tonight, hence the shuffle.   A random shuffling of 6,500+ songs is very hit or miss.  Sometimes I really think that iTunes can see deeply into my soul and cuts to the core of me with its shuffle choices.  Other times, it sucks and I'm like "Why the freak is this song on my iPod in the first place??" Tonight the shuffle is doing okay...the last few songs have been:
  • "Great Balls of Fire," Jerry Lee Lewis
  • "Who I Am Hates Who I've Been," Relient K
  • "Green Hearts," Ben Lee
  • "Got It All," Melee
  • "Wind It Up," Gwen Stefani (whoooo C Gunn!)

Anyone want to join me for Bootie LA next month?? :-)

2 Weeks of the 4 Fs: Family, Friends, Food, Fun

I’m composing this post on my flight back to LA after 2 weeks of the 4 Fs.  I thought that two weeks would be more than enough time to see and do all the things I wanted to do over the break, but that was definitely not the case. It went by so quickly!  I wish I had another week or so to rest and visit before diving back into the real world.

As I’ve mentioned in previous posts, my parents moved to Houston this year after living in Duncan, Oklahoma, for 30 years.  This was my first time to see their new house, and it was great! It’s in a gorgeous neighborhood and my mom has done a great job decorating.  My favorite things about the new place are the wonderful hiking/biking trail behind the house, the incredible jacuzzi bathtub in the master bath, and the peaceful back deck with a pretty fountain (that is the home to several cute little goldfish) where we liked to eat breakfast in the morning and drink wine in the evening. J

Christmas morning at the new home. Also, pictured here: the matching glasses that Daniel and I unknowingly both chose at the eye doctor recently. (We made sure to not wear them at the same time  the rest of my visit so we wouldn't look like awkward twinsies or something...)

As always, I loved seeing my family (and kitties!!). I miss my cats so much while I’m in LA that I turn into a legit cat lady when I’m home with them.  (Anyone who follows me on Twitter can attest to this). ;-) It was wonderful to see my grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins too.  My darling cousin, Erika, got home from serving a year in Iraq days before Christmas, so that was extra special. The local news even did a feature story on her! You can watch the video here. Pretty much, I have the best fam (and kitties), and I love them a lot, a lot.  J

After all that glorious family time, I spent my last weekend of my trip in Oklahoma to celebrate New Years Eve and the wedding of two dear friends from college, Sarah Larson and Colin Morgan .  This was truly one of the best weddings I’ve ever attended largely because it was a huge reunion of tons of college friends I haven’t seen since graduation 2 ½ years ago!  It was an absolute blast to catch up with these old friends and dance the night away.

So happy to be reunited with Amber and D!

Always fun to party with my beloved brother.
Dancing with the beyond beautiful bride.

Doing a cheesy huge Delta on the bride (or at least attempting to...)

I’m already looking forward to my next visit with my family (in May for my brother’s graduation!) and the next big wonderful reunion with college friends. Someone else needs to get married… stat.  ;-)

Currently listening: Ingrid Michaelson
Why: I’ve already established in previous ‘currently listening’ posts that Ingrid is one of my very favorite musicians these days, but the reason for my listening to her lovely tunes this evening in particular is that Sarah and Colin danced their first dance as husband and wife to her adorably sweet song “The Way I Am” from her album “Be OK”. Maybe the sappiness from the wedding hasn’t worn off yet, but let’s just say I’ve listened to this song  and her cover of “Can’t Help Falling In Love” more than a couple times on this flight home. ;-)

My First LA Thanksgiving

My past two Thanksgivings were spent visiting Mary and enjoying the sights, sounds and attractions of exciting New York. Our lovely tradition-in-the-making included going to the Macy's Day Parade, a full day of amazing Thanksgiving food with friends followed by holiday movies, and at least a Broadway show or two.

At the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, 2009.

Our beautiful Thanksgiving dinner table at Mary's old apartment in the Upper West Side, 2009.

We put our beloved tradition on hold this year since her family decided to spend the holiday with her in NYC and I didn't want to intrude. (A sad decision to make, but thus allowing me to visit her in the spring... I've never seen New York in the spring, but I've heard lovely things. I'm already looking forward to it).

Since New York was a no go and I'll be traveling to visit my family in a mere matter of weeks for Christmas, that left one logical plan for my holiday: spending my first Thanksgiving in LA.

I was beyond excited for this little break from work. We got a half day off the Wednesday before Thanksgiving and then the rest of the week off as well.  I practically skipped out of Warner Bros like a giddy school girl getting out for summer break.  (Subsequently, the glorious time off went by entirely too quickly and I am absolutely not ready to dive back into normal routine tomorrow morning. I think I shall begin a countdown to my Christmas vacation...20 days! Yesss).

I somehow went from being slightly concerned that I might not have a legit place to eat Thanksgiving din to having two dinners to attend on Thursday (for the first time in my life). The first was at Will's apartment...which just so happens to be my old apartment. (A brief synopsis of Will: He is the new tenant at my old apartment and I met him when I went there to get my mail. He is great. I'm rather fond of him... ;-)

Will carving the delicious turkey.

So much amazing food.

My second dinner was at Matt and Ellen's. Ten other dear friends from my church came here to dine, give thanks and play games.  Ellen had the place decorated like something out of a magazine, and the food was, again, amazing. Two Thanksgivings dinners is intense, let me tell you.  I tried to pace myself, but didn't do very well I think.  I honestly don't know if I've ever been so full.
Table #1.

Table #2.

After I recovered from my extreme gluttony on Thanksgiving, I thoroughly enjoyed the rest of my holiday weekend in LA. I hiked in Griffith Park, went to a couple wonderful yoga classes, watched OU beat OSU, went to a 'Home Alone' movie night, and went to an incredible 80's themed bowling birthday party for my dear friend Marissa.  That party was reminiscent of a college date party: everyone was dressed up, most people were not sober, and we turned the Jewel City Bowling Alley in Glendale into a straight up dance party. So. Much. Fun. So fun in fact, that I think I must include a couple photos...

My friend Kelley came with me. We love the 80s.

With the fantastic birthday girl.  Thank you for being born and having an awesome party, Marissa.

Overall, my first Thanksgiving in LA was great!  While I missed Mary horribly and we have already determined we want to reinstate our Thanksgiving tradition in 2011, I am very thankful to have friends here who have really become my LA family.  They are wonderful.  (and so are nice little 'stay-cations', if you will. After this fun and relaxing break, I am totally a fan). :-)

Currently listening to: Norah Jones
Why: Because I'm trying to relax and mentally prepare for the work week tomorrow and her soulful sounds are about as soothing as they come. And also because "Come Away With Me" is truly one of the most beautiful and romantic songs ever and I will never ever tire of it. Ever.

Thankfully,

The First Annual Reunion of "The Greatest Quartet in the World"

Oh how lovely and true that quote is.  Three of my best friends from college and I (or "The Greatest Quartet in the World" as my sweet brother deemed us) recently reunited in LA.  We hadn’t all been together since May 2008 (with the exception of one large group dinner in December 2008 which hardly counted, it was so quick).  We’ve all grown and changed dramatically in the past two years: Kayla just got her Masters in Spain and is now preparing to move to South America for a bit; Anne is one of the best neo-natal intensive care nurses in Washington DC; Vanessa is a married home-owner quickly advancing in her career at Conoco Phillips; I am trying to navigate the exciting craziness that is the entertainment industry in LA.  Still, as we sat in our PJs in my living room and caught up over Oreos and wine, it was like we were all still living in the Tri Delt house and nothing had changed at all. J Here are some highlights from their visit:

Kayla got to LA a few days earlier than the other girls, so I got us tickets to a taping of The Ellen Show.  We were on the front row on the aisle, so we definitely got lots of camera time enthusiastically clapping and laughing and dancing (oh my!), as seen below.

Kayla and I went to the Griffith Observatory at night to enjoy the expansive views of the pretty city lights…sort of like looking at the stars like I used to do in Oklahoma, only totally different.

We returned to Griffith Park that weekend with the other two girls in our quartet, only this time in daylight.  Oh heyyy Hollywood sign!

I obviously had to take Kayla to my favorite comedy show that I rave about all the time.  As we were waiting in line outside the theater, I spotted Andrew Garfield  After being in LA for more than two years now, I generally never get star-struck, but I was definitely excited about this one. “There’s Andrew Garfield…!!” I whispered to Kayla through clenched teeth. “Who??” she asked. “Eduardo from ‘The Social Network….!!” She still looked confused.  “Eduardo from ‘The Social Network!’ I urgently whispered again. About this time, the short little hottie girl with him saw me looking at him and protectively pushed him along. Ha. He was gorgeous.  My favorite celeb sighting in quite some time. J

Saturday morning, we made a delectable brunch together: homemade waffles, turkey bacon, scrambled eggs, and mimosas. Yummm. It was cozy and fun to cook together and enjoy brunch in our pajamas.

Even though our team very sadly lost horribly on this particular Saturday, it was nice to watch the game with my darlings from OU. It was also nice that we could commiserate the depressing loss with each other afterwards... blurrrgh. :-/

We saw an exceptionally excellent sunset at the beach on Saturday evening. Man, I love those things. :-)

We had a glorious Sunday brunch at Luna Park; I think this may be my favorite event of our weekend.  Bottomless sangria/mimosas+amazing food/atmosphere+catching up for hours with my best friends=heavenly. (The only thing that would have made it even BETTER is if I hadn't had to be the D.D.  Those mimosas and sangria are gooooood!)

We literally decided Sunday morning to attempt to get last minute tickets to Phantom of the Opera at the Pantages for Sunday evening... and it worked!  Not only did we get day-of tickets to this amazing show, they just so happened to be on the 5th row, center!  Count our lucky stars... :-)

I must say, I think our first annual reunion weekend was a great success! The perfect mix of fun outings and really just enjoying being together. I'm already looking forward to our next reunion (tentatively scheduled for Washington DC, 2011).  Can't wait. :-)

Currently listening to: Taylor Swift
Why: I never thought I’d be a girl to buy the new Taylor Swift album the day it came out, but when some stressful news at work led me to some retail therapy on October 25th, I did just that.  I reluctantly got into T Swift last year when my former roommate more or less insisted that I burn her cd from her.  Try as I did to resist, I quickly became a legit fan.  This girl is good!  No matter what stage of a relationship (or non-relationship) you are currently experiencing, there is probably a T Swift song that relates perfectly and can be used for great therapy and/or celebratory sing-alongs.  ;-)  I wish I could enjoy the catharsis of being able to come home from an exhilarating and/or disappointing date and just write an awesome song about it like she apparently can.  Also, despite her huge fame, she really just seems like a normal FUN person.  I totally have a friend crush on her.  My current favorites on her new album: “Enchanted,” “Sparks Fly,” and the title track "Speak Now.” I just read an article today that my girl is joining the extremely exclusive club of artists who have sold a MILLION albums in one week.  Don't pretend you're too cool... just go ahead and buy it too. You'll be singing along and wanting to be T Swift's friend like me before you know it. :-)

Until our next reunion,

Happy Two Year Anniversary, Los Angeles.

This is the gorgeous dessert I enjoyed tonight as I toasted to my 2nd anniversary in LA.

(Just kidding... I found it on google images...)

But, truly, July 28th marks the anniversary of me first setting my timid feet into the beautiful Los Angeles sand after making the daunting drive from Oklahoma all by myself two years ago.  While I'm not celebrating this momentous occasion with corny (albeit impressive) food art, I thought an appropriate way to pay homage would be a nice little walk down memory lane.  So, without further adieu....

Two Years in LA by the Numbers

  •     Number of apartments lived in: 2 (1 month in Hermosa Beach, 23 months in Miracle Mile, and currently    in the process of moving to #3 in Los Feliz!)
  • Number of plays/musicals seen: 8

  • Number of days before I realized I wasn't a super-human and quit one of the aforementioned jobs: 2
  • Number of movie premieres attended: 3
  • Number of boys I've dated (and by dated I mean to have gone on more than 2 dates with…haha): 3
  • Number of trips to NYC to visit Mary: 3
  • Number of trips home to OK to visit the fam: 5
  • Number of professional LA sporting events attended: 2 (1 Lakers game, 1 Dodgers game)
  • Number of freaking earthquakes (that I've actually felt): 3
  • Number of times wine tasting: 1
  • Number of times I've been in the audience of television show tapings: 5 (Jimmy Kimmel Live (twice), Ellen, SYTYCD, and Dancing with the Stars... all of which have been when mother is here visiting...haha)

  • Number of hours spent on the beach: too many to count  :-)

Five Most Memorable LA Moments

5.) Getting a Christmas present from Victoria Beckham, my gym buddy. ;-) (A bottle of perfume that had "To Annie, Best Wishes from The Beckhams" written on the box).
4.) Being front row center to Jack's Mannequin "Secret Show" at the Viper Room.
3.) Going to two charity events/parties at the Playboy Mansion (which I know sounds crazy and scandalous... they were actually very classy and amazing parties, if I do say so myself...!)
2.) Talking to Taylor Kitsch (Tim Riggins) at the gym. This happened in February of 2009 and my heart STILL beats fast when I think about it!

1.) Going to the Oscars the past two years! And to pinpoint the most memorable moment of my most memorable moment, if you will, talking to Meryl Streep at the Governor's Ball this year! (For more deets on this and the rest of my Oscar experience this year, click here).

What a lovely (slash random) walk down memory lane that was! Cheers to you, LA... thanks for an awesome two years. Excited to see what fun memories the next two will bring.

Currently listening: Angel Taylor
Why: I've been really into female singer/songwriters lately, so when I stumbled upon Angel's debut album (Love Travels) on sale for $6.99 on itunes a few days ago, I didn't stand a chance.  ;-)  While she still has some maturing to do in order to reach the levels of Norah Jones or Ingrid Michaelson (whom I looove and whom Angel toured with this spring), her music is definitely enjoyable and relatable. (A few tracks even have Christian undertones, which I found to be a pleasant surprise). I especially like the track entitled "Chai Tea Latte"... I'm not sure if it's the former barista in me digging the title or the all-too-familiar theme of wanting a guy to man up and ask you out.  Either way, I give it two thumbs up.

Luck Be A Lady Tonight

I recruited my amazingly hilarious friend Marissa to roadtrip it with me and as luck would have it, another dear friend, McKenzie, was there nannying for 2 weeks (God bless her). Here is a photographic journey through our fun-filled weekend (sidenote: I just bought a new camera and I'm a bit excited about it)....

Another friend from LA, Erica, was randomly there. She worked some amazing connections and got us VIP passes to surpass the crazy long line at Tao. It's an awesome huge club at the Venetian. Fun indeed.
We laid out at our hotel pool Saturday. And by 'lay out', I mean that we hung out in the pool so as to not completely die/melt in the sweltering 100+ degree heat.
We went to the Beatles Cirque du Soleil show "Love" at the Mirage on Saturday night. So amazing!
It was bit of a sensory overload at times... so many awesome things to see and hear at once. It was unlike anything I've seen before... two thumbs up for sure. Here's a 30 second video to give you little preview of its greatness...

After the show we had drinks at the Beatles Revolution Lounge and a delish din at Kokomo's at the Mirage...very cool settings and very wonderful food/drinks.
We then went to Jet where we enjoyed and took full advantage of several free drink passes given to us by eager promoters (like the kindly gentleman pictured below).
We then relocated to Ghostbar which is on the 55th floor of the Palms. We danced, made some new friends, and enjoyed the expansive views.
C Gunn and I decided we had to gamble at least a little bit, so we hit the tables. She tried her hand at craps (which ended shortly) and then we moved on to roulette. I was only going to allow myself to spend $20 (I'm not too keen on throwing money away... call me crazy...), and since there was a $10 minimum bet, I thought I'd be out in a hot minute. Luck was indeed a lady to me that night, however, and I ended up leaving with $52. Cha ching!!
And that ends the photographic journey.  As you can see, it was such a great weekend! I miss my college friends A LOT, so anytime I get to see them is wonderful. Vegas defnitely redeemed itself for me this time around. Viva Las Vegas, indeed. :-)

Currently listening: Andy Davis.
Why: Do you ever completely accidentally stumble upon a song with lyrics that are 100% applicable to your life at the moment? That happened to me this week with this talented musician I discovered in college when he opened for Matt Wertz.  His piano based singer/songwriter style is very enjoyable, and the lyrics to "Bigger Than Us" were absolutely perfect for me this week.  My very favorite song of his, however, is "Union & 3rd". So, so pretty. Definitely check him out.

Being only a 4 hour drive away (on a good traffic day) or a >1 hour flight, Vegas is a regular weekend getaway for Angelenos. I, however, have had absolutely zero desire to make this jaunt through the dessert after a less-than-wonderful experience in Sin City for my 21st birthday (but that's a whole 'nother story....) This changed when one of my best friends/roommates from college, C Gunn, informed me that she would be there for a work conference and asked if I wanted to meet her there. I hadn't seen her since this same conference sent her to LA last summer...SO, Las Vegas, ready or not, here I come. ;-)
